Brazil's Scholarship Programme for First-Degree University Students – PEC-G

The Government of Brazil offers scholarships to students from Antigua and Barbuda and Barbados wishing to pursue full time first-degree university courses in Brazil.

Applicants will have a wide choice of courses and universities, throughout Brazil and should choose two courses in the same field of knowledge as well as two cities in which they wish to study, both in order of preference. The chosen courses must be in the same knowledge area as the subjects studied in the last three previous years.

As courses are conducted in Portuguese, applicants will spend the first year attending an intensive language course, which they must pass in order to gain entry to the course for which they were selected in the following year. Not being approved in the Portuguese language course, the scholarship will be cancelled without the right of appealing and the student will have to return to the country of origin immediately. Applicants who already possess the Brazilian CELPE certificate (Certificado de Proficiência em Língua Portuguêsa para Estrangeiros) will be exempted from the Portuguese language courses.

Applicants are informed that a list of universities and courses included in the programme is available at the Brazilian Embassy. Please note that it is advisable to choose universities that offer Portuguese language tuition.

Scholarships cover tuition fees only. Applicants will be required to provide for their own support in Brazil, which is estimated at a minimum monthly cost of US$ 500.00. Student’s living quarters are available only at some universities and direct enquires should be made in advance.

Applications will NOT be accepted from students that:
  1. Brazilian candidates even if they have dual nationality;

  2. Have a temporary or a permanent Brazilian visa;

  3. Have not finished their secondary education;

  4. Have studied their secondary education in Brazil;

  5. Have been selected and were subsequently cut from the programme;

  6. Have been selected and that have given up the scholarship without presenting just cause;

  7. Have not achieved an overall level of 60% in the subjects related to their chosen graduate courses.

Requirements to apply:
  1. Be citizen of a developing country with which Brazil has signed an agreement in the areas of culture or education or science and technology;

  2. Be between the ages of 18 and 23;

  3. Must have studied the secondary education in the country of origin and have achieved an overall level of 60% in the last three years;

  4. The final average must be equal or higher than 60% in mathematics and the subjects related to the graduate course the candidate is applying for (example: if the candidate does not have an average mark equal to or higher than 60% in Biology, the candidate can not apply for courses in the field of biological science).

Documents to be presented:
  1. Application form duly completed, which can be obtained in the above-mentioned website.
    1. Candidates must choose two courses in the same field of knowledge.

    2. On choosing the cities of preference and in order to help in the adaptation process, candidates must inform of any possible contacts they have in Brazil.

    3. Candidates will be disqualified in case of:
      1. incorrect or incomplete completion of the application form

      2. lack of signature

      3. adjustments or alterations.

  2. A certified school transcript of subjects and scores in each secondary school year as well as certificate of conclusion (original and copy);

  3. Birth certificate of the applicant and of the applicant’s parents (original and copy);

  4. Original of the Declaration of Commitment signed and dated.

  5. Evidence and a signed statement (original) of financially independent while in Brazil;

  6. Medical certificate confirming physical and mental health.

Applicants will undergo an interview and preliminary selection at the Embassy. Final selection will be made in Brazil, with results available in November.

Usually choices must be reconfirmed in December each year. Student visas and the necessary documentation to enroll at the university will be provided in time

Brazil's Scholarship Programme for Full Time Postgraduate Courses – PEC-PG

The Government of Brazil offers scholarships to graduates from Antigua and Barbuda and Barbados wishing to pursue full time postgraduate courses in Brazil.

The Scholarship programme is intended only for candidates pursuing Master and Doctorate degrees. Please note that specializing courses and medical residency are not included in the programme.

Information on the scholarship programme can be obtained by visiting either the Embassy of Brazil in Bridgetown or the site: http://www.capes.gov.br/capes/portal/conteudo/10/PEC-PG.htm.

The scholarship funding is equivalent to that offered to Brazilian nationals and it covers:
  1. Return airfare when the student successfully completes the post graduate course. OBS: On arrival there is no transportation from airport to hotel or accommodation.

  2. Access to free medical and dental care and medication under the Brazilian National Health Service (SUS), in accordance with the Agreement signed by the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations and the Brazilian Ministry of Health, on January 25th, 1994.

The duration of the programme is as follows:
  • Masters–24 months
  • Doctorate–48 months
OBS: When the candidate is already studying in a postgraduate course, the scholarship will cover the period yet to be coursed.

Applications must be submitted to the Brazilian Embassy.

Requirements:
  1. Must be a citizen of a developing country with which Brazil has signed an agreement in areas of culture or education or science and technology.

  2. Candidate must not be in possession of a Brazilian permanent visa.

  3. Candidate must not be national of Brazil even if he/she has dual nationality or if one of the parents is Brazilian.

  4. In the case of former PEC-G (Brazil’s Scholarship Programme for First-Degree University Students) students, candidates must have been employed in his/her own country for at least 2 (two) years.

Documentation:
Candidate must send, by electronic mail, the application form completed in Portuguese (the form can be accessed in the site: http://www.capes.gov.br/capes/portal/conteudo/10/PEC-PG.htm.), along with:
    1. An authenticated photocopy of the Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese as a Foreign Language (CELPE-Bras),

    2. Candidates who do not posses the CELPE-Bras will be required to sit the examination to be held at the Brazilian Embassy in Barbados and

    3. Candidates that studied a graduate or post graduate degree in Brazil can present a declaration from the Administration Office of the intended post graduate course stating that they are knowledgeable enough to follow up the academic activities.

  1. Acceptance letter from the Institution of Higher Education (Instituição de Ensino Superior - IES) where the candidate plans to study, along with:
    1. Postgraduate programme (which must be one of those available in the site: http://www.capes.gov.br/capes/portal/conteudo/10/PEC-PG.htm.

    2. Area of interest.

    3. Line of research and subject of the dissertation or the thesis.

  2. OBS: Acceptance letter does not entitle candidate to automatic enrollment in the scholarship programme. It must state that the IES exempts the candidate and his/her financial institution from any kind of fee.

  3. Curriculum vitae in Portuguese language.

  4. Proof of employment, when it is the case. Preference will be given to those on study leave from their current employment.

  5. Two (2) letters of recommendation written by professors or researchers in the area (model in the PEC PG Manual).

  6. “Plano de Estudos” form, duly completed and signed (available in the site:http://www.capes.gov.br/capes/portal/conteudo/10/PEC-PG.htm).

  7. Photocopy of undergraduate and graduate (when required) degree and transcripts of the course/courses of study, including Master and/or Residencies, where applicable.

  8. A photocopy of the passport.

  9. Medical certificate confirming physical and mental health issued within the last 90 days. It must state if the candidate is under any chronic disease treatment.

Applicants will undergo an interview and preliminary selection at the Embassy of Brazil.
